about

In early 2014, when my wife was 8 months pregnant with our son, we spent 5 days at a silent meditation retreat. It was over the course of this retreat that the idea for this record started to take shape.

Two of the songs were written directly following the retreat, when we went to visit my hometown of Burlington, VT. We drove up in this amazing snowstorm. It took forever. When we got to the hotel, I sat down and wrote my song of the day, which happened to be "It's Real". The next day we went to look at my childhood home. It was still snowing and the wind was crazy. When we got back, I wrote "You Can Never Go Home".

Most of the songs deal with some aspect of vulnerability, the inevitability of death, or the ways in which we try to hide from ourselves. This is all the kind of stuff that was racing through my brain as I sat at the meditation retreat. I started to catalog the song a day songs that fit best around this theme.

Sonically, it was really important to me that I keep the songs as stripped down as possible. Throughout my career as a songwriter, I've never felt comfortable sharing my voice without couching it in a ton of effects and stuff. Over the last two years, I've found that I've started to actually like my voice and feel a lot better about letting it sit more central and clean in the mix. This is the first record since I started recording my work almost 15 years ago that is just me and a guitar.
